LOCATION 37 | Walk the Highlights of Georgian & Victorian Bath
Cross Upper Borough Walls
At the crossroads of Barton and Union Streets, being mindful of any traffic, turn to your right and cross Upper Borough Walls.
[5 SECOND PAUSE]
Continue to walk down the slope of the wide pedestrianised area of Union Street. As you walk, perhaps imagine you are walking though the backyard of a large smelly drinking establishment - a public house in the 1700s, because this is what was here then, before this new road was built to connect the upper town with the lower town. This provided a much easier passage for visitors to the location of the hot water springs in the centre of Bath. This is why it is called Union Street, as it unites the two areas! - I’ll see you at the junction with Cheap Street in a short while.
