Lampasas Walks: Historic Downtown Lampasas
Left up Live Oak
Take a left here, back to the courthouse.
So far, we have mostly talked about the frontier days and the early days of the twentieth century here in Lampasas.
But there is one other event that made Lampasas famous -- the Flood of 1957. On May 12, 1957, Sulphur Creek flooded, causing the near complete destruction of the downtown and Courthouse square area. The flood made national news and caused a financial loss of over five million dollars. Only five lives were lost, with one local man spending the night in a tree, since the flood happened shortly after midnight. A series of damns and dikes were constructed to prevent a similar disaster after this.
