Jacob van Lennepcanal
You're now standing on the bridge. This canal is called the Jacob van Lennep Kanaal, named after - again - a famous Dutch poet.
You can either stop here for a moment, or keep walking, while I tell you more.

Did you know that Amsterdam has more than one hundred kilometers of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges? Some call Amsterdam the 'Venice of northern Europe' and I will leave it up to you to decide if thats true. But it's a fact that water is one of Amsterdam's defining characteristics. One of my friends has a small boat, and we often take it out when the weather is nice. It's easy to go from here through the city center to the IJ-river. My favorite destination is the Amstel-river, as it's nice and calm with a beautiful Dutch landscape.
As you might have noticed, many Amsterdammers live actually on the water in a houseboat. A houseboat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a home.
Some houseboats are not motorized, because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point and often tethered to land to provide utilities.
An original way to enjoy Amsterdam is to stay on one of these houseboats. These floating bed & breakfasts are located in some of the city's most picturesque spots, and are fully equipped. Perhaps an idea for your next holiday?
