Old Yerevan Walking Tour: From the Cascade to Republic Square
About the Tour
Yerevan is 29 years older than Rome, yet it almost looks as if it just stepped off one of Martiros Saryan’s vibrant canvases.
On this walking tour, you’ll discover how this ancient capital, founded in 782 BC, became known as the Pink City. You explore its blend of neoclassical precision and Armenian tradition, built from warm tuff stone that glows in almost perpetual sunshine.
The tour begins at the monument to Alexander Tamanyan, the visionary architect who gave Yerevan its amphitheater layout. You’ll walk through the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden, an open-air museum home to world-class works by Botero and Plensa.
As you pass Old Yerevan’s red and black tuff mansions from the 1800s, you’ll hear stories about Karabala, the legendary flower-seller and beloved city ghost, and some key historical events that took place here.
The tour ends at Republic Square, where the city’s iconic clock tower brings Yerevan’s history, art, and spirit together in one unforgettable view.
On this comprehensive two-hour tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Ascend the monumental Cascade, a giant limestone stairway where contemporary masterpieces decorate every step, and enjoy the breathtaking view of majestic Mount Ararat from the top
- Discover the Vishapagorg (dragon carpet) mosaic, made from 900,000 pieces of marble, granite, and tuff
- Hear students rehearsing outside the State Conservatory and pass the Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, where Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance premiered
- Visit Martiros Saryan Park, an open-air gallery where local artists display their paintings weekly
- Explore Armenian carpet weaving traditions, the rich red dye known as Karmir Vordan, and the life of Komitas, who preserved thousands of folk songs
- Visit Charles Aznavour Square to see the fountain of the twelve zodiac signs and the “Walk of Fame” of Armenian cinema stars
- Experience the modern pulse of the city by strolling down Northern Avenue, the city’s most contemporary promenade – and the perfect spot to grab a coffee or ice cream
This tour introduces you to a capital where Mount Ararat watches eternally over the Armenian spirit, where singing fountains dance to classical melodies beneath tuff façades.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts at the Cascade complex, right in front of the Alexander Tamanyan Monument.
How to get here:
By metro: The closest station is Yeritasardakan (about a 10-minute walk via Isahakyan Street).
On foot from Republic Square: It’s a scenic 20–25 minute walk. Head through Northern Avenue to the Opera House, then continue straight up the pedestrian Tamanyan Street.
By taxi: Ask for "Cascade" or the "Tamanyan Statue."
How to know you’re in the right place:
You should be standing before a large stone statue of a man leaning over architectural plans. Behind the monument, you will see the grand limestone steps of the Cascade rising up the hill.
Parking is limited in this area, so walking or taking a taxi is recommended.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
This walking tour from the Cascade down to Republic Square passes through vibrant areas packed with cafes, restaurants, bars, and green spots perfect for breaks.
Yerevan's center overflows with outdoor seating—ideal for people-watching, Armenian coffee, or a full meal.
The area around the Tamanyan monument and sculpture garden buzzes with trendy spots. Grab coffee or light bites with views of the stairs and city.
Northern Avenue (pedestrian street midway)
This lively boulevard lines with outdoor cafes and restaurants—ideal for a relaxed stop.
Trendy options for wine, cocktails, or light meals amid shoppers and street performers.
Around the Opera House / Azatutyan Square
Swan Lake and surrounding park offer benches and greenery for rest. Cafes spill onto the square. Numerous open-air cafes for Armenian coffee, snacks, or drinks.
Evening vibe turns lively with locals—great for sunset views.
Republic Square
Cafes and restaurants around the square for dinner or drinks while enjoying the lights and music.
These stops make the tour flexible—pause for 15 minutes or a full meal. In winter, many have indoor seating; outdoor terraces shine in warmer months. Enjoy the famous Armenian hospitality!
Best time of day
Seasonality: This tour is enjoyable year-round. Yerevan is famous for its sunny days, even in winter.
Spring & Autumn: These are the most comfortable seasons for walking, with mild temperatures and blooming gardens (April–May) or golden foliage (September–October).
Summer: It can get very hot (35°C+). If you're touring in July or August, I highly recommend starting before 10:00 AM or after 6:00 PM to stay in the shade.
Winter: The path is usually cleared of snow, but the stairs can be slippery. Dress warmly!
Operating Hours:
The Outdoor Cascade: Open 24/7. You can climb the stairs and enjoy the sculptures at any time.
Indoor Escalators: Generally open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This is a great cheat code
if you want to reach the top without climbing hundreds of steps.
Exhibition Galleries: If you wish to visit the indoor museums at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, they usually operate Friday–Sunday, 10:00 AM–8:00 PM.
Safety & Crowds:
The route is very safe and follows pedestrian-friendly areas. For a magical experience, aim to reach Republic Square in the evening (typically after 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM in summer) to catch the Singing Fountains show.
Precautions
Safety:
Central Yerevan is exceptionally safe, even late at night, and is often cited as one of the safest city centers in Europe. While crime is very low, the areas around the Cascade and Republic Square can get quite crowded on evenings and weekends. Just use common sense and keep an eye on your personal belongings in busy spots.
What to Bring:
Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. The Cascade stairs and some old sidewalks can be uneven or slippery when wet.
Sun Protection: Yerevan is very sunny. Even on cooler days, bring a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen.
Stay Hydrated: Carry a bottle of water. You'll also find many pulpulaks
(traditional Armenian water fountains) along the way where you can drink fresh, cold water for free.
Tech: Ensure your phone is fully charged. I recommend downloading the tour over Wi-Fi beforehand so you can enjoy it offline without worrying about mobile data.
Physical Activity:
The tour involves a fair amount of walking. To reach the top of the Cascade, you can choose between climbing the outdoor stairs for the views or using the indoor escalators (available 08:00–20:00) to save your energy.
